Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving Praise ‘Unbelievable’ Victor Wembanyama: Dallas Mavs vs. San Antonio Spurs

The Dallas Mavericks take on the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night, and Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving had nothing but complimentary things to say about Victor Wembanyama.

Leading up to Wednesday night’s much-anticipated season opener between the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, there has been a heightened amount of hype around No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, and rightfully so, given his incredible preseason play.

As the Mavs try to bounce back from a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, that journey starts in San Antonio, and Dallas’ star backcourt duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving had nothing but great things to say about Wembanyama ahead of the game.

"It's pretty crazy what he does on the court," Doncic said. "What's he … two meters [tall]? Oh, 7-4? … The things he does for that length, it's unbelievable the way he moves, the way he handles the ball, shoots the ball, and obviously the blocking. So, I've been watching, and he's an amazing player."

As for Irving, it didn’t take him long to see why Wembanyama was the top pick in the draft. With Wembanyama’s raw talent and Hall-of-Fame coach Gregg Popovich’s teaching, Irving thinks Spurs fans have a lot to be excited for.

"[He’s] deservedly so the number one pick ... It's been incredible to see some of his highlights," Irving said. "And I know Pop has a diamond in the rough over there. I think the whole Spurs organization knows it."

Despite making several roster upgrades over the summer, the Mavs are still being doubted by many national media outlets, and that’s understandable given last season’s disappointing results. However, Doncic, Irving and the rest of the crew will try to change that narrative by starting with a win over Wembanyama’s Spurs to start the 2023-24 season.
