Coming into Wednesday night's matchup with the red-hot Los Angeles Clippers, who have won eight consecutive games, the shorthanded Dallas Mavericks knew they needed to get out to a fast start.

With just a little under eight minutes left in the first quarter, the Mavs did just that, jumping out to an 11-8 lead over the Clippers after an emphatic put-back dunk from Derrick Jones Jr.

Jones, who was signed to a one-year veteran's minimum deal with the Mavs over the summer, has had a great season so far, averaging a career-high 9.8 points and shooting a career-high 35.5 percent from deep. The eighth-year veteran wing had a tough outing in the Mavs' last game, which was a 26-point loss to the defending-champion Denver Nuggets, scoring just six points and shooting 0-5 from deep.

So far, though, Jones has gotten off to a much better start in tonight's game against the Clippers, tallying seven points on 3-4 shooting overall before picking up his second foul with two minutes left in the first quarter.
