What Josh Green Contract Extension Means for Dallas Mavs

Josh Green’s three-year, $41 million contract extension gives the Dallas Mavericks a lot of flexibility going forward.
In this story:

Over the last two decades, there have only been four Dallas Mavericks who ended up signing an extension before their rookie contract was up: Josh Howard, Devin Harris, Luka Doncic, and now, Josh Green.

On Monday, before the deadline buzzer, the Mavs announced their agreement with Green, which, according to multiple reports, is a three-year, $41 million contract extension that will go through the 2026-27 season.

This deal appears to good for both sides, as Green gets an annual raise of nearly $9 million, and the Mavs retain flexibility by extending him with a deal that’s essentially the same as the Mid-Level Exception. Given how Green has improved each year since being selected 18th in the 2020 NBA Draft, that price point is good value for a young 3-and-D guard/wing.

Last season, Green averaged career-highs across the board with 9.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 53.7 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from deep. Green was one of only five players to shoot 40 percent from deep and 60 percent on two-point shots last season among individuals to attempt at least 100 shots of each type (h/t ESPN’s Bobby Marks).

And even if Green doesn’t keep his current trend of improving every season going, the Mavs will still have a good player on a decent contract that could potentially be moved in a trade later down the road. Bottom line, this was a win-win move for the Mavs, and Green should also be relieved that he got his money secured before starting his fourth season in the league.

The Mavs tip-off the 2023-24 season against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night, and we should find out soon whether Green will be Dallas' starting small forward or not. Stay tuned to DallasBasketball.com for loads of pregame and postgame coverage to come.
