Report: Pelicans Active In Pursuit Of Scoot Henderson
New Orleans, LA - NBA Insider Shams Charania reported the Pelicans "are seriously pursuing a Top 2-3 pick in this month's draft." The thought is New Orleans is targeting guard Scoot Henderson with either of those picks. The Charlotte Hornets and Portland Trail Blazers own the rights to those two selections, and the San Antonio Spurs are expected to draft Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall selection.
Henderson, a 6-2 guard from Marietta, Georgia, had a successful high school career and was named Class 6A Player of the Year. He played for NBA G-League Ignite in 2021. This past season Henderson finished with 17.6 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game. With his strength and athleticism, he's most often compared to a mix of Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose.
Just what kind of haul it would take to pull this deal off remains to be seen. Recent rumors suggest the Charlotte Hornets are targeting Alabama forward Brandon Miller with the second pick. That means New Orleans would be doing business with the Portland Trailblazers for the third pick.
A recent report suggests Blazers star Damian Lillard is "actively recruiting" free agents to come to Portland. Shortly after Portland's season, Lillard spoke about trying to get another star to the Blazers rather than building with young drafted players. New Orleans has a couple of stars on its team and plenty of assets to make a deal work.
New Orleans will enter the fourth year of the Brandon Ingram-Zion Williamson duo with just one playoff appearance. Injuries have decimated the Pelicans' seasons the last two years, leading this team to underachieve. Could a shakeup be happening in New Orleans?
We'll have to wait and see what the Pelicans do during the draft on June 22. The wait won't be too long.
