Devin Vassell Brings 'Huge Impact' for Spurs Rebuild

The San Antonio Spurs should be excited about what they have in Devin Vassell.

In this story:

The San Antonio Spurs are still several players away from building a true contending roster, but there's a chance a couple of pieces to the championship puzzle are already in the building.

If there are any Spurs currently on the roster with the biggest chance to be on the next great Spurs team, third-year pro Devin Vassell is probably one of them.

"Vassell’s ceiling is higher than it once seemed," The Ringer writes. "But that evolution has brought greater expectations. He’s a lynchpin piece in a rebuild that could last until his prime. In the here and now, Vassell will get touches, shots, and an opportunity to bloom that otherwise might never have happened. What he does with it will have a huge impact on San Antonio’s future."

Even though Vassell played in just 38 games this past season for the Spurs, his 18.5 points per game marked a career-high for the 2020 lottery pick, a huge jump from his 12.3 points per game average in the 2021-22 season.

With Dejounte Murray traded to the Atlanta Hawks last offseason, the opportunity arose for Vassell to have a larger role, and he delivered. But with the potential of a high draft pick like Scoot Henderson or Victor Wembanyama coming into the team and reclaiming the "star" role, Vassell may not have the opportunity to be a top player like he was this season.

Had he played more, the Spurs would probably understand more of what they already know ... Vassell can hoop and he is an important part to the equation in San Antonio.
