Spurs Best Landing Spot for Victor Wembanyama?

Victor Wembanyama may not have a better fit for the NBA Draft than the San Antonio Spurs.

Victor Wembanyama is about to make one organization very happy this summer, and that team could be the San Antonio Spurs.

With the best odds to land the No. 1 overall pick alongside the Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets (two teams that have picked in the top-five in each of the last two drafts), the Spurs could see their fortunes change.

This could be San Antonio's first time picking in the top-five since 1997, where the team landed Hall-of-Famer Tim Duncan. And taking Wembanyama would give the team it's first real big man star since Duncan.

"Even if you're a little iffy on the Rockets' young talent and love Devin Vassell more than most, the San Antonio Spurs are still the rebuilder with the least *potential* superstar talent on hand," Bleacher Report writes. "Wembanyama would take care of that, and it'd be hard to come up with a better developmental landing spot than the one that'd put him under the tutelage of Gregg Popovich, who presided over the maturation of Tim Duncan, Wembanyama countryman Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard."

The Spurs need a new face of the franchise in this new rebuild. With Dejounte Murray gone, Popovich unofficially assumed the role as the team's most popular figure; one could even argue that he's held that title since Kawhi Leonard was traded back in 2018. But by taking Wembanyama, it gives the Spurs a true identity again and a generational talent to officially kick off the team's ascent back towards the top of the league.
