'Foolish' Spurs Fall Short vs. Wizards
The San Antonio Spurs are back in the loss column after losing to the Washington Wizards 118-113 on Monday night at the Frost Bank Center.
The Spurs led by six points going into the fourth quarter, but the Wizards' 31-20 run in the final frame secured a win, sending San Antonio fans home disappointed.
It's a loss in which coach Gregg Popovich says comes from their own mistakes.
"Well, that's what I call a self-inflicted loss," Popovich said. "I thought Washington played harder than we did. They played smarter. They executed better. We didn't have enough people playing well, or playing smart and we did that to ourselves. So I think it's a tough loss because, for the first time in a while, we looked young. We looked immature, We looked foolish and did not play with each other the way we had been. So that's a disappointment but that's the way it goes and you move on."
The Spurs committed 14 turnovers throughout the game, which was four less than the Wizards' 18, but San Antonio still couldn't make the right plays down the stretch.
There's often been talk this year about how the Spurs need to play a "full 48 minutes" in order to win, but it's a challenge for young teams to do so consistently night in and night out.
Will Spurs Acquire PG at Trade Deadline?
Just after the wins against the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves, it seemed like the Spurs were turning a corner, but a loss in a very winnable game has San Antonio going back to the drawing board.
The Spurs are back in action tomorrow night against the Orlando Magic. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
