Blazers' Scoot Henderson Reacts to First NBA Meeting vs. Spurs' Victor Wembanyama: 'Just Weird!'
The San Antonio Spurs topped the Portland Trail Blazers 118-105 at Moda Center on Thursday night, but it felt like a bit of deja vu for fans who remember when Metropolitans 92 took on the G League Ignite in Las Vegas last October.
Just like they did before becoming the top two picks in the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson dueled once again on Thursday, though this time marked their first meeting as pros.
“If you were free that night and you’re a fan of basketball, I don’t know how you didn’t watch it,” Spurs guard Tre Jones said of that meeting in Vegas. “You’d heard all the rumors and saw the highlights, of course you had to be tuned in to it.”
Henderson got the best of Wembanyama on a few occasions, much like he did in that highly-anticipated G League game last fall. But it was Wembanyama who stole the show, and Henderson certainly realized how impactful the Spurs rookie star was.
Wembanyama Sets Unique NBA Record vs. Blazers
“His length alone is just weird, it’s like he hovers over you,“ Henderson said of Wemby. “You can’t really feel him or bump him off because of his length.”
Regardless of the final score, both rookies gave fans a show.
Wemby finished with 30 points, six rebounds, six assists and seven blocks in 24 minutes of action while Henderson had 25 points and four assists but six turnovers.
Wembanyama is out for the second night of the back-to-back in Portland due to "rest."
