LOOK: Peso Pluma Sets Stage For Spurs' Victor Wembanyama
The AT&T Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs, sold out on Sunday night as thousands of fans piled in and watched Victor Wembanyama’s jersey take center stage for the first time ... only he wasn’t the one wearing it, that honor belonged to music sensation Peso Pluma.
Like Wemby, Peso Pluma (which translates to Feather Weight) is a thin young superstar in the making that immigrated to San Antonio from another country before developing into one of the most respected artists at his craft.
Today, Peso Pluma may be a 24-year-old chart topper headlining his sold-out Doble P arena tour and competing with Bad Bunny, but both he and the Spurs’ No. 1 overall draft pick, in part, owe some of their meteoric rises to the same city.
Born in Mexico, the singer came to San Antonio with his family in the eighth grade and had to learn English. Flash forward to the present, and his collaboration with Eslabon Armado, “Ella Baila Sola,” became the first Mexican regional song to enter the top 5 of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in April. He currently occupies 11 spots on their Top 100 chart.
Coming from France and standing at 7-5, Spurs big man Wembanyama might not seem to have much in common with a 5-7 Mexican singer, but considering the success that both are expected to have in the future, association with thin frames and teenage years spent in San Antonio, it's easy to see why Peso Pluma warmed up the AT&T Center while wearing the young phenoms jersey.
When the NBA regular season tips off, Spurs fans will be hoping that Wemby can put on a show just as captivating as the one they witnessed on Sunday night.
