WATCH: San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich Gets on Mic Mid-Game, Tells Fans to Stop Booing Kawhi Leonard
Gregg Popovich has seen and done it all during his 28-year career as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, but fans might've seen a first for the Hall of Famer during the second quarter of Wednesday's meeting with the Los Angeles Clippers at Frost Bank Center.
As Clippers forward and former Spurs star Kawhi Leonard headed to the foul line with 3:06 left in the second quarter, he was met with the usual rain of boos that he's received every time he's returned to play in San Antonio since 2019. Leonard was traded to the Toronto Raptors in July 2019 after a dramatic and confusing turn of events, and Spurs fans have felt betrayed ever since.
But Pop had clearly heard enough booing from the home fans. As Leonard was attempting his second free throw, Popovich grabbed the PA microphone and made an announcement to the home fans.
"Excuse me for a second. Can we stop all the booing and let these guys play?" Popovich said. "It's got no class and it's not who we are. Knock off the booing."
The fans only responded with more booing of Leonard to end the second quarter. The Clippers headed into the locker room with a 54-48 halftime lead.
Popovich has made it clear in the past that he still has a good relationship with Leonard despite his odd departure from the Spurs, but telling the home fans to stop booing in defense of his former player is taking this to a never-before-seen level.
The Spurs (3-11) will look to battle back in the second quarter and end their nine-game losing streak.
