Spurs Hire New Physician, Announce Partnership With UT Health
The San Antonio Spurs announced that they have come to an agreement with UT Health San Antonio to be the official sports medicine partner for the team.
With this agreement also comes the hiring of Guy Nicolette, MD as the newest lead sports medicine physician of the San Antonio Spurs.
"This thoughtfully designed partnership is built on the principles of research, medical and public health education, and will feature community health programming across the city," the Spurs said in a press release.
Nicolette previously was the assistant vice chancellor of University Health Services at University of California-Berkeley. Previously, the Spurs' job belonged to David Schmidt, MD and Paul Saenz, DO for the last 30 years.
While Nicolette is taking over as the lead, Schmidt and Saenz will remain with San Antonio and work in collaboration with Nicolette to transition between regimes.
In the press release was a statement from Nicolette who will be taking over the entire division.
"UT Health San Antonio is pleased to be the official sports medicine partner of the San Antonio Spurs," Nicolette said. "We've put together a winning team of specialists who are trained and ready to respond to the medical needs of each San Antonio Spurs player with high-quality care to help them succeed on and off the court."
Nicolette and his team will be charged with the health of newest Spurs phenom, rookie Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio drafted Wembanyama out of France with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and fully intend on building the franchise around him.
