Spurs 'Uneventful' Free Agency Sparks Lackluster Criticism
The San Antonio Spurs' offseason has been quiet to say they least.
They re-signed Tre Jones, Julian Champagnie and Sandro Mamukelashvili. On top of this, the team brought in Cedi Osman and Lamar Stevens as they helped facilitate a trade that sent Max Strus to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
These moves led to CBS Sports giving the Spurs a "C" for their grade of moves they've done so far into the the free agency period.
"Free agency has thus far been pretty uneventful for the Spurs," CBS Sports writes. "They re-signed Tre Jones and absorbed the contracts of Cedi Osman and Lamar Stevens to help Cleveland get Max Strus. They still have some flexibility to pursue one of the remaining restricted free agents, and they've been linked to Grant Williams, but for now, the Spurs did no real long-term good or harm in free agency."
As they mentioned, there's still room and flexibility moving forward. They could target a Grant Williams in free agency, but they don't have to.
Right now, the Spurs are projected to roll out a young lineup that could spend the entire season developing, led by No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama. With Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Tre Jones and Jeremy Sochan will be supporting Wembanyama over the course of his first season.
Because of their young starting lineup, they don't have to do much. Sure, they can bring in veterans off the bench, but the Spurs have such a storied culture and many former players around the team that it's not a necessity for their rebuild.
If nothing else, the Spurs can take a similar approach to the Oklahoma City Thunder where they acquire expiring salary dumps in return for draft compensation, and eat that salary over the course of the season. Using their leftover salary to acquire draft assets would be more productive than leaving their remaining cap space untouched.
