Spurs' Gregg Popovich, Victor Wembanyama Package Deal?

Victor Wembanyama will have Gregg Popovich as his coach for the foreseeable future after he signed a five-year extension with the San Antonio Spurs.

SAN ANTONIO - When the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Draft Lottery, I wondered if that would extend the 74-year-old Gregg Popovich's career. 

What impact might Pop's age have on Victor Wembanyama's long term future in San Antonio? In short, will Wemby leave because Popovich won't be here much longer?

Those worries have subsided at least for now after the club announced this week a five-year contract extension for the winningest coach in NBA history. At 74, most people aren't resigning with their company for another five years. Most guys that age are wondering when the tomatoes will grow in the yard or whether their feet and back will allow them to get to the bathroom without pain this time. Not Pop. 

He's still blowing and going and coaching and drinking excellent wine. Wemby himself alluded last week to seeing Pop working out in the team's gym everyday. 

It's not like the new super draft pick hasn't noticed that his coach was already 55 when he was born. It's a safe assumption Wembanyama has already wondered who the next head coach in San Antonio will be. Pop is still quite capable of not only coaching but ready to see the new kid and the rest of this growing roster into the good times again.

Pop is healthy. He's in great shape. It's not only a relief to Spurs fans but it's motivating to a guy like me who's feeling those middle age effects. If Pop can lead an NBA franchise at his age then there's no reason I can't stay healthy and feel important when I reach that time in my own life. I didn't need some magazine to show me that. I just needed to picture Pop pumping iron at the gym.
