Spurs' Victor Wembanyama Must Deal with Social Media Trolls

Victor Wembanyama is building a base of online trolls that want to see him fail, but the San Antonio Spurs rookie will rise above it.

SAN ANTONIO - If the Twitter world were the law, San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama would have been on a plane back to the French league on Saturday.

One would have thought he was the worst number one overall draft pick in history had they just been monitoring the rot on Elon Musk's social media crap house. I was stunned by the ridicule during Friday night's debut. While he missed a bunch of shots and lacked temerity at times I was breathless watching Wembanyama. I saw a young man who physically and athletically looked every bit the billed goods we got prior to the draft. He has such a smooth, fluid, confident demeanor on the court. He dribbles like no man over seven feet ever has. It's almost frightening to think what he'll be capable of once he grows into himself as an NBA player. I went to bed excited for the Spurs' future and mad at the idiots who called him a bust 20 minutes into his first-ever Summer League game.

In today's world if you choose to get on social media, you don't need to wait for anything. You can give a knee jerk, thoughtless opinion in real time. This is something Tim Duncan never had to deal with early in his career. To Duncan's credit he's never had social media. Wemby does. He's also just 19 years old.

Hopefully he's got the maturity and enlightenment not to allow garbage in his notifications get to him. I'm betting he's got the fortitude to laugh it off or better yet not even read any of it. Unfortunately for me, I did read a bunch and I regretted it when I went to bed after Friday night's game. I also got a pretty good kick out of it all though after Sunday night's game in which all those know it all's in my feed were nowhere to be found. That's how trolls work I suppose.

For them, I'll leave you haters with my own knee jerk reaction after watching him in the first two games: Wemby is gonna be awesome.
