Spurs Claim Sixers Ex Julian Champagnie Off Waivers
The San Antonio Spurs have claimed former Philadelphia 76ers forward Julian Champagnie off of waivers, per reports Thursday from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Champagnie, who went undrafted out of St. John's in 2022, was waived by Philadelphia on Tuesday after previously being on a two-way deal. He appeared in just two games for the Sixers this season and was held scoreless. In a combined six minutes, he went 0 of 2 from the floor and registered one steal during two separate blowout wins on Nov. 22 and Nov. 27.
However, Champagnie has earned some valuable rookies reps through the G League, as he's spent ample with the Delaware Blue Coats. In 18 appearances with the team, Champagnie has averaged 14.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists while shooting 41.9 percent from deep in 28.7 minutes per game.
While nothing is official yet, it's likely Champagnie is headed toward another two-way contract with San Antonio and could get plenty of action in the G League with the Austin Spurs.
But on a young Spurs team that has been led by its rookies as of late, playing time under coach Gregg Popovich isn't out of the question for Champagnie.
The Spurs (14-45) return from the All-Star break to pay a visit to Dallas to take on Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic and the Mavericks on Feb. 23.
