Spurs Clock Ticking as Marcus Morris Buyout Deadline Looms

Marcus Morris was acquired via trade on Feb. 9. Will the San Antonio Spurs buy him out?
In this story:

The San Antonio Spurs don't have much time before the clock runs out on Marcus Morris' ability to sign with a new team and play in the playoffs this season.

Players have until Friday, March 1 to buy out with their team in order to be eligible for the playoffs.

While The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that the Spurs were "likely" going to buy out Morris, he remains on the roster nearly three weeks after San Antonio acquired him in a three-team deal that sent Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers and Buddy Hield to the Philadelphia 76ers.

"That subtraction hasn't come across the transaction log just yet, likely due to some negotiating between the franchise and player on his buyout amount," Bleacher Report writes. "That obstacle feels unlikely to prove insurmountable, though, especially since Morris has a good chance to not only latch on with a contender but also potentially play significant minutes for them."

The Spurs don't have much to lose by keeping Morris, but they would lose out on a roster spot that could be occupied by a two-way player or a young prospect who could get an opportunity to showcase their game for the Spurs as they wind the season down.

A buyout is what's best for both sides, especially considering Morris hasn't played with the Spurs yet, so keep an eye on a potential move between now and the end of the week.

The Spurs are back in action tomorrow against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.
