Spurs PG Tre Jones: The Next Patty Mills?
SAN ANTONIO - Every San Antonio Spurs championship team has had a strong, sound presence at the point guard position.
This iteration of the Spurs hopes that can be Tre Jones, who signed a two-year extension earlier this offseason.
He may be here for the next decade, but I’m not sure in what capacity. If he becomes the next Tony Parker, that may be well beyond his expectations. But if he becomes Patty Mills, the deal will have been well worth it.
Mills, who's a cult hero in south Texas for good reason, was a key cog off the bench and in the locker room. He's still missed around here and if Jones is even half of what Mills brought to the club, he's a steal.
Mills played 10 years with the Spurs from 2012-21 and played for the franchise's 2014 championship team. Even though he has never averaged more than 12 points per game, Mills is still in the NBA thanks to his ability to make his teammates better.
Jones will be tasked to do that for his teammates, especially No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama. If Jones can pull out some pages from Mills' playbook, he should also be around San Antonio for a while, perhaps also winning a ring like the Aussie did.
