Spurs Season Coming Down to Scouting 'Keepers'

The San Antonio Spurs are in the middle of what many would call a lost season. So how can the Spurs find purpose in the final 20 games of the campaign?

The San Antonio Spurs don't have much to play for in the final month or so of the season.

With a 14-47 record and a franchise-worst 16-game losing streak on their hands, the Spurs are simply going through the motions at this point, but that doesn't mean the rest of the season has to be a lost cause.

Bleacher Report posed a question for each NBA team for the rest of the season, and asked for the Spurs, "How many keepers do we think we have?"

"San Antonio has already identified a few keepers—Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan chief among them—but not nearly enough to establish a nucleus," Bleacher Report writes. "That's what the remainder of this season should be all about."

Sure, there will be some keepers that come down the line, likely in the 2023 NBA Draft, but potential is there for a few other members of the team.

Rookie guard Malaki Branham has started the last nine games for the Spurs, scoring in double-digits in all but one of those contests. Second-year pro Charles Bassey is also getting an extended look after his contract was converted from a two-way deal to a standard one.

Being able to target these players and evaluate their progress in games that don't have that much weight on the franchise's future is crucial and could accelerate the rebuild if the right development takes place and some of these prospects show promise in panning out as a keeper.
