LOOK: Spurs Meet with Texas Coach Rodney Terry
SAN ANTONIO - When the San Antonio Spurs declared last year that they wanted to build their brand in Austin they weren't kidding.
Not only has the organization sold a big chunk of the business to Austin computer guru Michael Dell, they played two "home" games at the brand new, swanky Moody Center last season and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The club has even sought permission from the city of San Antonio to play more games in "The ATX."
The Spurs' latest commitment to Austin came Tuesday in sending a contingent up I-35 for a chat with staff members of the men's and women's teams at the University of Texas.
Newly-minted Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich, GM Brian Wright, CEO R.C. Buford, assistants and even legendary player Manu Ginobili sat down with Rodney Terry and Vic Schaefer and both of their respective staffs. The Spurs went there to swap stories, share knowledge, give tips, etc. to a wide eyed Terry who proudly boasted pictures on his Instagram page.
This was the first of what will become an annual staff clinic between the Spurs and the Longhorns. San Antonio didn't decide to do this because they are UT fans. This is simply another tactic in building their brand in Austin. At some point San Antonio and Austin will become a megaplex such as Fort Worth-Dallas. The Spurs are making sure that they are way out in front of it.
