Spurs Ex Avery Johnson Defends Victor Wembanyama Playing in San Antonio
The arrival of Victor Wembanyama has the San Antonio Spurs under a microscope in the NBA media world. With such a talented, high-potential player coming to town, people are quick to tear down the city or team.
Ahead of the draft, former Spurs guard Avery Johnson joined CBS Sports HQ as a guest, and one of the three panelists called San Antonio a "boring" landing spot for Wembanyama.
"No, I just said it was boring for the league to have Wembanyama go to San Antonio," the panelist said on the show.
The former Spurs guard, however, was quick to defend San Antonio.
"Are you up for an extension here at CBS Sports?" Johnson jokingly asked. "Because if you are I'm talking to all the big bosses. I will not support your extension with that type of mind."
Spurs fans don't take lightly to San Antonio slander, and neither does Johnson, who spent 10 seasons with the team in his career.
"David Robinson, Tim Duncan and now Wemby. We don't even need to pronounce his whole name," he said.
San Antonio has a history of housing two NBA legends. In the early days, it appears as if Wembanyama could be the next great Spurs player.
Not only does Wembanyama bring more eyes to the Spurs, he makes the location more of a draw in general. Summer League was packed for his debut, and him playing in a real NBA game will only be more anticipated.
The Spurs may also be able to land more free agents, whether in the offseason or in the buyout market. Either way, the team might have an easier time building a team around Wembanyama.
The impact that Wembanyama brings to San Antonio will be both good and bad. Spurs fans will be in a great position to enjoy good basketball, but at the price of having constant media attention, which isn't always good.
