Spurs' Victor Wembanyama Immersing Himself Into San Antonio Culture
SAN ANTONIO - For the second time in the last few months, Victor Wembanyama has made a San Antonio bar called Southtown 101 go viral.
The first time was because of a beautiful mural of Wemby painted on the side of the front of the building by local artist Colten Valentine. San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich even drove past the place for an inspection and selfie with Valentine. That photo is prominently displayed behind the bar.
On Sunday, Wembanyama himself checked out the mural and even hung out with patrons inside the joint. Donning a cowboy hat, sweat shorts and a long sleeved baggie shirt Wembanyama pulled up a chair at the bar and hung out with the locals. Of course, no alcoholic beverages were consumed by the 19 year old. It was pure wonderment for those who happened to be there when the kid walked in.
Last week, Wemby visited the handful of centuries old Catholic missions that still stand in and around the city as Spurs legend Manu Ginobili served as tour guide.
The day was capped with a stop at an outdoor court underneath of a section of down town freeway in which Wembanyama shot half court shots in sandals or "chanclas" as they're called in this city. The week prior to that it was a stroll through an inner city arts district in which the Parisian took in local works and even purchased a few pieces.
He hasn't taken a shot for the Spurs in an actual game but already Victor Wembanyama has endured himself with not only the willingness to be seen in the city but an ease with those that come up to him. San Antonio is a town that at times feels like a bit of an outlier even in it's own state.
Only history and a bunch of balls in a net will tell how it all goes. For now, Wemby and his new city couldn't have had a better start to what everyone involved hopes to truly be a relationship that lasts por vida.
