Suns vs. Cavaliers Game Preview
The Phoenix Suns are in the midst of a painful five-game losing streak but have a chance to redeem themselves tonight at the Footprint Center against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It has been only four days since the Suns and Cavaliers met in which strong performances between Donovan Mitchell (20 pts, 6 reb, 9 ast) and Caris LeVert (21 pts, 6 reb) propelled the Cavaliers to a 90-88 victory.
The Suns are already without star player Devin Booker (groin) and could be missing their floor general too as Chris Paul is questionable to play with a hip injury. Paul sustained this hip injury in Phoenix's last meeting against the Miami Heat two nights ago, only tallying 12 minutes total.
Despite not being a natural point guard, it was Damion Lee who played in replacement of Paul (Cam Payne is out for a couple weeks with a foot injury) and the Suns may have to rely on him heavily tonight if Paul is unable to go.
The Cavaliers on the other hand could be without point guard Darius Garland, as he is questionable with a thumb injury. While Garland returned to action on Friday night to take on the Nuggets after missing three games in a row, the thumb injury is clearly still nagging him to the point where his status is in jeopardy.
If the Suns are going to compete with a strong team like the Cavaliers, they will need to see improvement from their bench. In Friday night's game against the Heat, only one Suns bench player recorded over ten points. The remaining four players failed to reach over five points which is unacceptable for a team that now more than ever needs to rely on supplemental help from the bench.
An intriguing player matchup to between centers Deandre Ayton and Jarrett Allen. Since Allen arrived in Cleveland during the 2020-21 season, he has become a force both on the offensive and defensive end. Ayton, being one of the better scoring centers in the NBA, should be a handful to deal with for Allen on the defensive end.
Currently holding a record of 20-20, the Suns are at risk of dropping to under an under .500 record for the first time this season. At this point of the year the Suns have no reason to be comfortable. While Phoenix as the No. 7 seed, only two games separate them and the No. 12-seeded Lakers. meaning a couple more losses can take the Suns out of the playoff conversation completely.
Tonight will either be a turning point in the Suns' roller coaster season or a continuation of losing basketball in the Valley.
