Phoenix Mayor Condemns Robert Sarver in Statement
Following the recent investigation by the NBA into the Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver, the city of Phoenix mayor Kate Gallego, along with council members and district representatives, released a statement to the public addressing the matter.
The full statement can be seen below:
In the statement, Mayor Gallego writes that they "...are appalled by the actions substantiated in the NBA's independent investigation into the Phoenix Suns' managing partner Robert Sarver."
First reported by NBA Insider for ESPN Adrian Wojnarowski and Senior National NBA Writer Baxter Holmes in November of 2021, the NBA has been investigating Sarver for "workplace misconduct". On Tuesday, the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz concluded their investigation.
The investigation, since becoming public as of Tuesday, has rocked the sports world and caused outcry from the NBA community in particular.
This prompted the city of Phoenix to publicly address the situation. The statement details their frustration with "...a culture that would enable these actions to occur time and again, with – at most – ineffective disciplinary action."
The city of Phoenix is also taking action in investigating Sarver, claiming, "We have asked the city staff to investigate any actions as we, leaders of the City of Phoenix, can take in light the details substantiated in the report."
The statement shifts in tone in the last paragraph calling on the NBA "...to take the necessary actions required to ensure this behavior is stopped..."
The city of Phoenix expressed "The actions as outlined in this report do not represent the values of this city." The Suns will look to drastically change the culture and improve the work environment for employees and fans.
