Thunder Preseason: Who is Leading the Charge for OKC Thus Far?
It may not look like it record-wise, but the Oklahoma City Thunder are thriving, improving and powering through its preseason slate.
After three games, the Oklahoma City Thunder have a 1-2 record, with its sole win coming against the San Antonio Spurs in Chet Holmgren's NBA debut. From there, coach Mark Daigneault's squad has dropped two straight, but only been outscored by four total points.
It's come down to the small things for the Thunder, but preseason records don't really matter. Stats, however, do. And these are the players leading the way for Oklahoma City so far:
1) Luguentz Dort - 19.0 Points
So far this preseason, Dort has proven himself as one of the Thunder's top scorers. Through three games, the guard has averaged 19 points to lead Oklahoma City's roster. In his first outing against the Spurs, Dort played a spark plug role behind Holmgren, who spent most of the night going back-and-forth with Victor Wembanyama.
During his second game, however is when Dort really broke out. In a homecoming trip to Montreal, Dort scored 24 points to help give the Thunder a big lead in the first half. Though it eventually gave that up in a three-point loss to Detroit, the guard proved himself as a top playmaker — something Oklahoma City certainly wants to see continue during his fifth professional season.
2) Jaylin Williams - 8.0 Rebounds
Despite Holmgren's "return" to the fold this season — debut may be a more fitting word — Jaylin Williams has displayed a level of hustle and athleticism that set him apart on Oklahoma City's roster in the first place. During the Thunder's matchup against the Spurs, Williams had a quiet night from the field, but picked up seven rebounds during his team's victory.
Much like Dort, however, Williams really came alive against the Pistons, tallying 18 points, nine rebounds and a 70 percent shooting clip on the night. He and Holmgren will make for a strong "big" presence on the court, with Williams' productivity alongside the rookie proving to be promising.
3) Vasilije Micic - 5.5 Assists
After spending over seven years overseas with his draft rights belonging to Oklahoma City, Vasilije Micic hit the NBA scene with something to prove, and that he did.
Being praised for his point guard abilities, Micic possesses the ability to run the floor and distribute the basketball, which has taken the form of being the Thunder's assists leader so far this preseason.
With his overseas experience, Micic also brings a level of veteran leadership to a young Thunder team that could use it, which is something that could likely continue into the regular season. Being a strong passer is just the start.
4) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander - 4.0 STOCKS (Steals + Blocks)
Although Gilgeous-Alexander has only played one preseason game thus far, he showed that he hasn't lost a step since last season. The superstar guard only took four shot attempts, hitting three of them, but mostly impressed on the defensive side of the ball. Against the Detroit Pistons, he recorded three steals and one block.
Gilgeous-Alexander is a two-way player in every sense of the phrase, scoring 30 points a night and locking up opposing guards on defense. He shows off his versatility every night alongside Luguentz Dort, making for one of the best defensive guard duos in the NBA.
