Lakers Sign Golden State Warriors Champion
It was announced by Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report and NBA on TNT that the Los Angeles Lakers are signing former Golden State Warriors guard Quinndary Weatherspoon. With the NBA preseason finishing up, teams around the league are getting final looks at different players before finalizing their opening night rosters. With training camp rosters expanded from standard rosters, teams have more flexibility to bring additional players into camp, and that's seemingly what Los Angeles is doing with Weatherspoon.
Weatherspoon played 11 games for the Warriors during the 2021-22 season, which is the year they won the title, so he is technically an NBA champion even though he did not play in the postseason for Golden State. With 42 career NBA games under his belt, Weatherspoon has played for the Warriors and San Antonio Spurs.
Drafted 49th overall by the Spurs in 2019, Weatherspoon has not found sustained NBA success, but is getting another opportunity with the Lakers. It's likely that Weatherspoon will eventually be waived by the Lakers and possibly join their G-League affiliate, but this is still a good opportunity for the former second round pick to show what he can do.
As previously mentioned, it's very common for teams to make signings towards the end of the preseason while they make decisions on who to use their final roster spots on at the NBA and G-League level.
