Report: Warriors Coach Being Considered for Atlanta Hawks Head Coach
The Atlanta Hawks shocked the NBA world today when they reportedly fired their head coach Nate McMillan with roughly two months left in the regular season. The team has already started its search for a new head coach, and it looks like Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson is on the list.
According to reports from Adrian Wojnarowski, Joe Prunty will be the current interim head coach for the Hawks. Their list of potential candidates includes the following: former Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder, Bucks assistant coach Charles Lee, and Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson.
The last time that Kenny Atkinson coached a full season for an NBA team was when he coached the Brooklyn Nets to a 42-40 record and they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Philadelphia 76ers. After that, he coached the Nets for 62 games in the 2019-20 season before resigning. His only head coaching experience has been with the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-2020.
After coaching the Nets, Atkinson became an assistant coach for the LA Clippers during the 2020-21 NBA season. Since August 13, 2021, he's been an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors. During the NBA Finals, the Charlotte Hornets offered Atkinson a head coaching position that he reportedly turned down after the Warriors won the championship.
Kenny Atkinson has experience coaching at a multitude of levels and would likely be heavily considered for the Atlanta Hawks head coaching job.
