Report: Warriors Exploring Surprising Trade
In a recent article, ESPN's Jonathan Givony said the Golden State Warriors are exploring the possibility of acquiring a high draft pick in exchange one of their young prospects, such as Jonathan Kuminga.
Givony acknowledged that the Warriors may have a limited desire to take on more youth projects, given the short window they have to maximize the final years of Steph Curry's prime; however, he did reveal the team's openness to exploring a move for a high draft pick.
This is a surprising report, because the Warriors have not found consistent rotational minutes for Kuminga, which makes a theoretical swap for another young piece, as opposed to a win-now veteran, hard to understand. It could be a situation where Golden State likes a certain draft prospect projected to go before their 19th selection, and feels a move up in the draft would help their team both now and in the future.
If the Warriors were to part with a player like Kuminga, they would have to feel somewhat confident that he doesn't have a direct path to the role he may desire next season. There have been reports about a potential disconnect between Kuminga's current role and his desired role, so it would not be surprising if that was a factor playing into Golden State's openness to moving a player like him for a higher draft selection.
