After Gary Payton II unexpectedly failed his physical, the trade that sent him from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Golden Sate Warriors is in jeopardy. James Wiseman also heads to the Detroit Pistons in this deal, meaning he could potentially return to the Warriors if the trade falls through. The Warriors have until Saturday to make their decision, but according to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Warriors are considering keeping Payton despite the failed physical.

"The Warriors remain extremely interested in a reunion with GP2, who was a critical member of the roster that last June won the 2022 NBA Finals," Poole wrote. "Which brings us to a couple salient factors. One, the Warriors still could – and likely would – choose to waive the failed physical and retain Payton’s rights, even if he is sidelined indefinitely, multiple league sources told NBC Sports Bay Area."

Poole added, "One source, familiar with the Warriors' desire have GP2 back on the roster, seemed 'sure' they would be willing to consider that option – despite being surprised by the failed physical. Golden State has up to 72 hours to accept the trade or rescind it."

Payton projects to really help the Warriors, especially in the playoffs, which likely impacts their decision. Payton is also under contract next season as well, which could alter Golden State's thinking. This will be an interesting situation to follow, but according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Monte Poole, the Warriors may just let the trade go through despite Payton's injury.
