Sacramento Kings Reportedly Took Warriors Free Agent Target
In a recent article, Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that the Golden State Warriors were pursuing veteran free agent JaVale McGee before the three-time champion chose to sign with the Sacramento Kings.
"Known commodity JaVale McGee was a nice late-offseason addition for the Kings (especially considering they won his services over the pursuing Warriors)," Amick wrote. "The state of his 36-year-old game (beyond this recent highlight reel) remains to be seen, but I’m told the Kings' optimistic plan would be for him to play a significant role."
This was very interesting to read, because the Warriors have history with McGee, which seemingly could have given them an inside track to signing him if they wanted to. Perhaps McGee felt Sacramento would have a more significant role for him, as the Warriors typically rotate Draymond Green and Kevon Looney at center, but it does seem Golden State is in the market for insurance up front.
For the Kings, this is a good pickup even if McGee proves to not be an effective rotation player. In need of some veteran and championship experience, Sacramento is getting both of those in McGee, who won two titles with the Warriors, and other with the Los Angeles Lakers.
As the free agent market dries up, the Warriors are becoming limited in their insurance big man options if that's indeed a hole they hope to fill.
