Joe Namath helps Darrelle Revis recreate classic poolside photo
For this week's SI cover, Jets cornerback Darrelle Revisrecreated a 1965 cover of Joe Namath in Times Square.
But Revis also traveled to Miami to remake another iconic photo—a poolside shot of Namath three days before Super Bowl III guaranteeing the Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts.
For the new image, Revis recreated Namath’s luxury pose in fine detail, replacing Namath’s reading materials with an iPad and mirroring his entourage with one of his own. That entourage includes Namath, seated to Revis's right.
“When Darrelle re-signed with the Jets this year, along with some other changes the Jets made, I think it’s given all of us Jets fans some enthusiasm,” Namath said. “We’re looking forward to this season.”
Namath, who quarterbacked the Jets from 1965 to 1976, was named the Super Bowl III MVP after the Jets’ historic 16–7 upset of the Colts. Revis, 30, returned to the Jets in March on a five-year deal. He began his career with New York, but was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013. He then spent the 2014 season with the New England Patriots on a one-year deal.
“I see a lot of similarities between Darrelle Revis and Joe Namath,” senior writer Greg Bishop said. “They’re both kind of the stars of the league, they’ve both made great impacts on teams, they’ve both won a Super Bowl ring. I think what Darrelle wants most is to bring a Super Bowl to the Jets, which is something that hasn’t happened since Joe was playing.”
