Trey Lance is getting ready for the 2023 season as shown in a clip of him throwing passes that went viral on Thursday.

Lance was named the 49ers’ starting quarterback for the 2022 season, but he only made two starts before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. The 22-year-old knows he has a lot to prove this offseason if he wants to earn the starting role again.

In a video captured by Preston Smith Photography, Lance can be seen throwing passes alongside Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The video, posted Thursday, is the first time fans have seen Lance throwing since his injury last season.

It’s unknown how or why this duo is practicing together, but the workout might help Lance to get some offseason pointers from the two-time Super Bowl champion.

Lance is not guaranteed the starting role in San Francisco this upcoming season as he heads into one of the most talked about quarterback battles ahead of the 2023 campaign. The former No. 3 pick will compete against Brock Purdy, who led the 49ers to the NFC championship game during his rookie season, along with the newly-signed Sam Darnold, who is coming off of two seasons with the Panthers.

It’s important to note that Purdy is also coming off of an injury after he recently underwent surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, leading to yet another question in San Francisco’s quarterback room this summer.
