Broncos DE Eyioma Uwazurike Suspended Indefinitely for Gambling
As the NFL continues to crack down on its gambling policy, another player has been handed an indefinite suspension. The league confirmed on Monday that Broncos DE Eyioma Uwazurike will be suspended indefinitely after it was discovered he had placed bets on league games during the 2022 season.
As a result of his suspension, Uwazurike will miss the entire 2023 NFL season. He’ll first be eligible to petition for his reinstatement on July 24, 2024.
The Broncos released a statement regarding Uwazurike’s suspension on Monday, via The Denver Post.
“We were informed by the NFL today that Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended by the league indefinitely for violating its gambling policy,” the team wrote in its statement. “Our organization fully cooperated with this investigation and takes matters pertaining to the integrity of the game very seriously. The Denver Broncos will continue to provide all members of our organization with the necessary education, resources and support to ensure compliance with the NFL’s Gambling Policy.”
Uwazurike is one of multiple players to have received suspensions for violating the league’s gambling policy. In late June, the NFL indefinitely suspended four players, including Colts’ Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry. Those bans came following the indefinite suspensions of the Commanders’ Shaka Toney and Lions’ Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore in April.
Detroit’s Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill were also suspended six games for violating the league’s gambling policy.
Uwazurike was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft by Denver, having played college football at Iowa State. He featured in eight games as a rookie, registering 17 tackles and two quarterback hits.
