A juicy rumor circulated back in June stating that Aaron Rodgers had turned down an opportunity to play for the Patriots.

New England coach Bill Belichick was asked about the rumor Monday, and he replied by saying he wasn’t aware of any such pursuit of the star quarterback.

“I personally couldn’t speak to that,” Belichick said on The Greg Hill Show on WEEI-FM. “Look, there’s a lot of conversation in the offseason between our personnel people, other executives. So, I don’t know what he’s really talking about. I personally didn’t talk to the Packers about Aaron Rodgers. No. … Aaron Rodgers is a great player. That wasn’t anything that I was aware of.”

Belichick didn’t totally refute the rumor, merely stating he was unaware of any possible trade talks. The rumor allegedly was started by Craig Carton of WFAN-AM in New York.

Either way, Rodgers ended up with the Jets, and the Patriots will start Mac Jones under center for the third straight year. The AFC East rivals will play each other on Sept. 24 in East Rutherford, N.J., and Jan. 7 in Foxborough, Mass.
