Garrett Wilson Explains Why He Felt Strongly About Vocalizing Support to Zach Wilson
Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson was among the most vocal supporters of Zach Wilson when he entered the game in relief of the injured Aaron Rodgers in Week 1.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Wilson discussed his belief in New York’s new starting quarterback and why he was so outspoken about it on the sideline during the team’s season opener against the Bills.
“Because of the effect that that can have on people. Belief. People believing in you,” said Wilson, via Harrison Glaser. “Sometimes it can seem like the world is against you, but it’s never really the case. We’ve always got our guys back... If he doesn’t know that, then I’m doing my job wrong. I want to make sure I give him all the empowerment in the world, and I know all the others guys feel the same about it.”
The second-year wide receiver showcased some leadership traits as he rallied his team behind its backup quarterback. With Rodgers out for the season, the Jets’ belief in Wilson will need to be steadfast throughout the year if the team hopes to compete for a spot in the playoffs.
Wilson’s remarks come after coach Robert Saleh committed to the former No. 2 pick as the Jets starter for the remainder of the campaign.
With Wilson set to quarterback the team for the next 16 games, his top wide receiver is making sure the entire squad is backing him in order to help build and maintain his confidence after being unexpectedly thrust back into the spotlight.
