Chiefs’ Harrison Butker Sets Super Bowl Record With 57-Yard Field Goal
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker set a Super Bowl record with a 57-yard field goal in the third quarter of Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday in Las Vegas.
The previous record was set just hours earlier by San Francisco 49ers rookie Jake Moody, who opened the scoring early in the second quarter. That was a far cry from the 30 years that the previous record of 54 yards, set by Steve Christie of the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII, stood.
Butker’s kick capped a nine-play, 47-yard drive and drew the Chiefs within 10–6 of the 49ers with 5:01 left in the third quarter.
Butker made four field goals, including a 29-yarder in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime at 19–19. His other field goals were from 28 and 24 yards.
Butker is a seventh-year pro from Georgia Tech who originally was drafted in the seventh round in 2017 by the Carolina Panthers.
Butker’s career long field goal is 62 yards, set Oct. 16, 2022, at home against the Buffalo Bills as time expired in the first half.
He led the NFL with 34 successful field goals in the 2019 season.
