Marvin Lewis, Mike Zimmer Give Their Top Offseason Moves For The Bengals

Cincinnati is trying to keep its Super Bowl window wide open in 2023.
In this story:

CINCINNATI — Two former Bengals coaches recently gave their views on how the team can take the next step and win a Super Bowl.

Marvin Lewis and Mike Zimmer pointed out three areas to attack for The 33rd Team.

  1. Bolster Offensive Line
  2. Manipulate Salary Cap
  3. Increase Pass-Rush Production

Lewis wants to see more explosive production from the run game.

"Joe Mixon’s yards per carry were down to 3.9 (from 4.1 in 2021), and they need to get him back over that 4-yard-per-carry plateau," Lewis wrote. "His touchdowns went down from 13 to seven, so if their efficiency running the football improves, that will continue to help them improve as a football team."

Zimmer is looking for Cincinnati to break its rigid salary cap rules.

"The thing to worry about the most is they’ve got a lot of players who are getting ready to get paid," Zimmer wrote. "Whether it’s Burrow, or receivers Ja’Marr Chase, Tyler Boyd, or Tee Higgins, they’ve got some guys who really do a good job. They’re gonna have to manipulate the salary cap there as well."

To round it out, Lewis wants to see more than 30 sacks on defense next season (29th last season).

"They have to be able to find another pass rusher and develop another pass rusher," Lewis wrote. "Whether they have one in-house or bring one in during the offseason."

All three factors should play a big role in a potential Super Bowl run as Cincinnati tries to capitalize on the final stretch of Joe Burrow's rookie contract.
