Joe Burrow Shares Theory on Why Tom Brady Briefly Retired This Offseason

The Bengals play the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay this season.

CINCINNATI — Tom Brady's retirement didn't last long. The soon-to-be 45-year-old retired for 41 days earlier this offseason, before ultimately returning to the Buccaneers.

Everyone seems to have a theory on Brady's plan. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow thinks there was a method to Brady's madness.

"Did anybody think he was gonna be retired? You guys gotta know better than that," Burrow said on the Full Send podcast. "He's playing way too well to give it up right now. I think he wanted to shut down the conversation because if he didn't announce his retirement, everyone would be talking about 'is he retiring, is he not retiring?' So I think he went ahead and did it to get everyone off his back so he could go think about it."

Brady led the NFL in passing yards last season (5,316) and threw for 43 touchdowns. He's still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

The Bengals and Burrow will get their chance to play Brady at least one more time. The Buccaneers host the Bengals in Tampa Bay on Dec. 18.
