NFL Insider Believes Ryan Jensen Would've Signed With Bengals if Tom Brady Didn't Return to Buccaneers
CINCINNATI — The Bengals added three offensive linemen in free agency, but Ted Karras, La'el Collins and Alex Cappa might not have been "plan A" for a team that desperately needed to improve in the trenches.
Peter King of NBC Sports believes that Cincinnati would've signed Buccaneers center Ryan Jensen if Tom Brady hadn't made the decision to return to Tampa Bay before the legal tampering period began in March.
“Right before Ryan Jensen was making the decision: ‘should I stay or should I go,’ I believe that Ryan Jensen probably would have gone to Cincinnati," King said on Pro Football Talk. "If that weekend Tom Brady didn’t call him and say ‘hey listen, I’m coming back, are you in?' At that moment Brady knew he had already lost two guards and he was about to lose, perhaps, very good chance, lose his center."
There was plenty of smoke about the Bengals landing Jensen prior to free agency. Instead, they signed Cappa from the Buccaneers and Karras from the Patriots—both players won championships with Brady. They added Collins a few days later.
All three guys are expected to play huge roles on the Bengals' offensive line this season.
