Buffalo Bills Coach Sean McDermott Wants The Old Josh Allen Back

The Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen haven't had much fun since their 3-1 start to the season.

The Buffalo Bills haven't had much fun of late after losing four of their last six games.

Josh Allen has been at the focal point of the team's struggles, as he's thrown 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in that stretch. With Allen and the team looking to find their groove again, Bills (5-5) head coach Sean McDermott has put more emphasis on having fun and trying to get his quarterback back to being the player who's viewed as one of the best players in football.

"He's the leader of our football team, let alone in this case, the offense," McDermott said. "Getting him back to having that look in his eye and having some fun out there and the guy that we have watched over the years but also back at Wyoming. Just going out there and having that joy when he's playing."

As for what has caused Allen not to be as jovial as usual, McDermott opted to be tight-lipped, though he has his conclusions for why that is the case.

"I have my own thoughts, but I won't go there right now," McDermott said. "Just overall, where we're trying to go offensively, where we're trying to go as a team, that's what I'm really focused on is that vision of what do we need to do and what needs to be back."

The offense's struggles led to former offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey being fired on Tuesday morning and replaced by quarterbacks coach Joe Brady after a 24-22 loss to the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football at Highmark Stadium. The Bills' offense has averaged 20.5 points per game in their six-game stretch. If Buffalo's offense is going to get back on track, it'll be on Allen and Brady's shoulders to turn things around.

Through Brady's first few days on the job, McDermott has noticed his connection throughout the building.

"He's done a real nice job," McDermott said. "He's picked up the ball and ran with it, not just with the staff, but also with the players. I try and check in with him nightly and say, 'Hey what do you need?' and he's usually in a good spot...He's usually a first in [and] last out type of guy. That hasn't changed this week either."

Brady and Allen will face a stiff first test together on Sunday in the New York Jets defense. The Jets' (4-5) defense has historically given Allen problems, including in the first game of the season when he completed 29 of 41 passes for 236 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in a 22-16 loss in overtime at MetLife Stadium. Allen was also sacked five times in the loss.

If Allen and the Bills' offense can find its stride in Brady's first game against a defense that's one of the best in football and has given them fits, it'd be a strong first step toward them getting back on track and having fun again as they look to get back into the playoff picture.

Buffalo hosts the Jets on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET at Highmark Stadium.
