Bills to Host Pair of WRs for Workouts, Still No DeAndre Hopkins
The Buffalo Bills have made sure to address their receiving corps through the draft and free agency this offseason, bringing more news faces to an offense that already held elite expectations.
But even in the midst of everyone talking about the team potentially adding free agent star DeAndre Hopkins, the Bills are looking at other receivers instead.
Buffalo is set to host receivers Preston Williams and Marcell Ateman for workouts on Thursday, per reports from Syracuse.com. Both guys have NFL experience, but are looking for that opportunity back into the league.
Williams is all too familiar with the Bills from his time in the AFC East with the Miami Dolphins. In 2019, he even had six catches for 82 yards against Buffalo in a 31-21 Bills win.
As for Ateman, he was a seventh-round pick by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2018. He played in 19 games across four seasons with the team, catching 20 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown during that span. He played in the XFL with the St. Louis Battlehawks this past season.
Williams played one game with the Carolina Panthers last season and just worked out for the Houston Texans. Could Buffalo become his new home? It depends on his willingness to potentially make sacrifices regarding previous plans.
"I just feel like I'm not getting the opportunities that I deserve, simply scripted-wise, not being on the field-wise," Williams told the media in August, via Dolphins Wire. "(I want) opportunities to show that I can beat my man."
The arrival of Tyreek Hill and the promising talent of second-year receiver Jalen Waddle made it hard to see a role that was going to be fulfilling enough for Williams.
But at 6-5, 220, and size that's fitting for red-zone duties, Williams provides a uniquely different skillset, one the Bills lack amongst the projected passing-game contributors for this season.
In 24 career games, he's totaled 56 catches on 111 targets for 787 yards and seven touchdowns. The issue with Williams has been the ability to stay on the field, as he's played in just eight games for each season he's been in the league.
But if the workout goes to plan for him and Ateman, the Bills could add more to an already-talented group.
