Bills Hire New Safeties Coach Joe Danna - Here's His Résumé
The Buffalo Bills have hired Joe Danna as the their new safeties coach, the team announced Thursday.
The move comes on the heels of the team firing safeties coach Jim Salgado on Jan. 26. But Danna, who spent this past season in the same role with the Houston Texans under coach Lovie Smith, brings much more NFL experience.
With 15 years of experience in the league, Danna can bring some valuable knowledge to a Bills secondary that performed a bit below expectations this past season compared to 2021 production. Before his time with the Texans, he spent five seasons in the AFC South with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he found himself working as the coach of the defensive backs, safeties and assistant secondary coach.
He also served as a defensive backs coach for the New York Jets in 2015-16 after time with the Atlanta Falcons, where he began his NFL coaching career as a defensive assistant in 2008.
Danna helped spark a surprising year by the young Texans secondary this past season. Despite the team posting just a 3-13-1 record, Houston allowed the 10th-fewest passing yards per game (209.3).
Buffalo's pass defense was middling this past season, as the Bills allowed the 15th-fewest passing yards per game (214.6). While this average wasn't horrible, it was hardly up to the standard the secondary set for itself in 2021 when Buffalo allowed the fewest passing yards per game by a wide margin (163).
After a successful season with the Texans, Danna will now arrive to Orchard Park with similar expectations.
