BREAKING: Colts Allow Jonathan Taylor To Seek Trade, Should Bills Move?
After Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor requested a trade in late July, the team has now given him permission to seek a trade.
Since news of Taylor wanting out first broke, the Buffalo Bills were one of the teams most linked to the star running back. As of Aug. 3, the Bills had the third-best odds to be Taylor's next team, only behind the Colts and Miami Dolphins.
Now there is movement in Indy. Should there also be movement in Buffalo?
Previously, Colts owner Jim Irsay was very adamant that the team would not trade Taylor as the two sides were locked in a contract dispute. Now that the Colts have seemingly reversed course, Taylor instantly becomes the top back on the trade market. Several teams will be vying for Taylor's services, and the Buffalo Bills could be one of them.
On paper, there's a lot to like with Taylor in the Bills offense. Buffalo has been lacking a star running back for some time now, and adding one would take a huge load off the shoulders of quarterback Josh Allen. In the brutal conference and division the Bills play in, any leg up could make a big difference.
However, there are also plenty of hurdles standing in the way of this move. Taylor is in the final year of his rookie deal, and based on his contract dispute with the Colts, he's looking to become one of the highest paid running backs in the league. Considering the Bills are already around $42 million over next year's projected cap, paying Taylor what he wants doesn't seem very realistic.
The problems with this move aren't just limited to the financial side, either. Taylor is coming off an injury-plagued season, and he's still dealing with injuries as he began Colts camp on the PUP list. Additionally, adding another running back to an already-crowded room could stunt the growth of James Cook, whom the Bills are very high on.
Time will tell if the Bills actually decide to pursue Taylor, but as it stands, there are a lot of things to sort out before they can even think about it.
