QB Rankings: Bills Josh Allen Below Eagles Jalen Hurts?

On a newly-released quarterback rankings, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills has fallen from grace a bit.

Prior to the 2022 season, Josh Allen's floor on most quarterback countdowns was No. 2, with some even going as far to rank the Buffalo Bills signal-caller as the top overall player at his position

But a year later, Allen doesn't appear to be getting quite as much love.

CBS Sports unveiled its post-NFL Draft quarterback rankings, and Allen checked in at No. 4:

"He invites more contact than maybe any QB in the league, which is concerning when you pair it with a tendency to trust his arm more than his mind. Fortunately that arm and those bulldozing legs are as powerful as they come."

Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes and Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow occupy the top two spots, respectively. You'll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't believe that Mahomes is the top overall quarterback in the NFL right now. And even if there's more of a debate to be had about Burrow vs. Allen, it's hardly a hot take to rank the former ahead of the latter.

But for as impressive as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was in 2022 - who comes in at No. 3 on this list - it still feels a bit early to have him above Allen.

Allen is arguably the most physically-gifted quarterback in the sport right now. He can throw the ball 80 yards and run you over (perhaps to a fault) on the ground. Unlike Hurts, he hasn't reached a Super Bowl yet, but the AFC is objectively more crowded than the NFC. And like Hurts, Allen has a second-place MVP finish on his résumé.

This isn't to take away from Hurts, but Allen -- outside of Stefon Diggs -- doesn't have the same type of supporting cast to work with. The Eagles have a deeper group of pass catchers, a better mix of running backs and clearly the superior offensive line. So Allen might have a legitimate gripe with being ranked at No. 4. If anything, he should be competing with Burrow for the No. 2 spot.
