Do Buffalo Bills Have a Right to Be 'Frustrated' with Josh Allen?
We know that the Buffalo Bills would like to find a way for MVP candidate Josh Allen to better protect himself.
We know that because GM Brandon Beane just flat said it.
“The only thing I'd get on (him about) is he's got too many bruises on him,'' Beane said in acknowledgement largely of Allen's aggressive style of play.
But is there a deeper concern there? A more worrisome problem?
A "growing frustration''?
That is the suggestion from Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News, who theorizes "that it almost sounded as if there were a bit of frustration underneath the surface when Beane spoke. ...
"The amount of punishment Allen absorbs is not a new topic,” Skurski said. “It’s something the team has addressed with him before.''
That much is true. And again, Beane isn't hiding this, saying in the press conference, "We've got to work on taking less hits. That's the only reason I'm going to ever criticize Josh is, just take less hits.”
Skurski, a respected beat writer, makes sure to put this in a sort of "soft frame'' by saying, "That was just my read. If accurate, that would be understandable. You can only tell a player so many times to slide or get out of bounds before frustration sets in if he’s taking too many unnecessary hits.”
Allen rushed 124 times, was sacked a career-high 33 times, and per PFF was hit an additional 29 times. He's 26 and he's big-bodied and his ability and his approach are assets. But ...
Beane said something else in the presser when was asked what has him most excited about the Bills.
“Josh Allen,'' was his quick reply, as he added, “it's a quarterback league.”
That's more about "faith'' than "frustration.'' ... and Bills Mafia hopes the Allen/Bills relationship keeps leaning way more toward the former than the latter.
