Bills' Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs Among 8 Team Captains for 2023

The Buffalo Bills have named eight players as captains for this season, including quarterback Josh Allen, receiver Stefon Diggs and more

Now that the Buffalo Bills have trimmed down their roster to reach the 53-man limit, they are officially in the final steps of their preparations for the new season.

As part of that process, the Bills revealed eight players as captains for this season on Wednesday. Most of these players were captains last year, but there is a new face in the bunch as well.

The Bills split their captains evenly between offense and defense, with four players on each side. On offense, quarterback Josh Allen is a captain once again, as he has been every year since 2019.

Receiver Stefon Diggs is also a captain for the third consecutive season, likely indicating that his relationship with the team is still going strong. This year, though, he's not the only receiver to earn the "C" patch as fourth-year pass-catcher Gabe Davis did as well. Davis, who is the Bills' only first-time captain this year, is looking to assert himself as the Bills' No. 2 receiver as he enters the final season of his rookie deal, so earning a captaincy is a good vote of confidence. Center Mitch Morse is the fourth and final captain on offense, earning the honor for the second straight year.

Most of the Bills' defensive stars earned the captaincy once again this season. Safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde were named captains for the fourth and third consecutive season, respectively, while star pass-rusher Von Miller received the honor for the second time entering his second season with the Bills. Linebacker Tyler Matekovich, largely a special teams player, also earned a captain role for the third straight year.

As previously mentioned, seven of the Bills' eight captains also held the same honor last year. Two captains from last year's squad, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and running back/special teams player Taiwan Jones, are no longer with the team.

When the Bills kick off their regular-season slate on Sept. 11, it's safe to say they'll have no shortage of quality leadership.
