Broncos Trade TE Albert Okwuegbunam to Eagles
Albert Okwuegbunam isn't hitting the waiver wire, after all.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Denver Broncos traded the fourth-year tight end along with a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round selection.
"Broncos planned to waive TE Albert Okwuegbunam. But before they officially turned his name into the league office, they got interest from the Eagles," Schefter reported.
Broncos coach Sean Payton confirmed the deal — which materialized shortly before Tuesday's 2 p.m. MT roster deadline — during his post-practice press conference.
"Basically a pick flop in '25; we get a six from the Eagles, they get our seventh," Payton said. "Pretty ordinary."
The move nonetheless comes as a surprise after Okwuegbunam enjoyed a terrific preseason, with his blocking and pass-catching improving dramatically. The latter was on display amid Saturday's 41-0 victory over the Rams when he snagged seven receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown — including a dazzling one-handed grab.
A 2020 fourth-round pick out of Missouri, Okwuegbunam appeared in 26 regular-season contests for Denver, tallying 546 yards and four TDs on 54 catches. He made four starts but has yet to play a full NFL campaign due to injury.
His departure — and that of Tommy Hudson, who was waived — leaves the Broncos with four TEs on its initial 53-man squad: Greg Dulcich, Adam Trautman, Chris Manhertz, and undrafted rookie Nate Adkins.
Okwuegbunam was the second trade struck Tuesday by the Broncos, who also acquired kicker Wil Lutz from the New Orleans Saints for a 2024 seventh-round choice.
