Report: Broncos Hire Isaac Shewmaker as Defensive QC
Speaking last Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he's "getting close" to finalizing his staff for the upcoming season. What followed was, perhaps, the finishing touch.
On Sunday, 9NEWs' Mike Klis reported that Denver hired Isaac Shewmaker in a defensive quality control role, a "similar" title to what Shewmaker held with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2021-22.
"In his first year with the Bolts, Shewmaker aided the coaching staff in the defense's transition to a 3-4 base front scheme, primarily contributing to the organization and day-to-day operation of the defensive coaching staff, specifically the secondary group," reads his Chargers bio. "As a unit, the Chargers' defense ranked third in the NFL with a conference-best 19 forced fumbles."
Prior to his Bolts stint, Shewmaker spent 2020 as a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee, working under then-defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley. He began his coaching career at Alabama in 2016— first as a defensive assistant, before assuming analyst duties in 2019.
Shewmaker becomes the second member of the Broncos' staff to bear Crimson-colored ties, joining new wide receivers coach Keary Colbert, an analyst for the program from 2014-15.
