Broncos Unveil Jersey Numbers for New Free-Agent Crop

The Denver Broncos have assigned jersey numbers to their free-agent acquisitions.
In this story:

The Denver Broncos brought in quite a few new faces this offseason well before the NFL draft kicked off. The Broncos were very active in free agency, targeting and landing a few tier-one veterans in the initial wave.

One of the easiest ways for fans to keep these new names straight is by connecting them with a jersey number. To that end, the Broncos announced which jersey numbers have been assigned to each new veteran addition.

Incumbent defensive tackle D.J. Jones changed his number to No. 93, while backup quarterback Jarrett Guarantano will now sport No. 16. The team made sure to mention that all jersey numbers are subject to change before the 2023 season.

Samaje Perine opted to take the No. 25, which is a number many Broncos fans spurned for a time, as the fumble-prone Melvin Gordon wore it for three years. Before Gordon, though, the number was made famous by former Pro Bowler and All-Pro cornerback Chris Harris, Jr.

Running back Tony Jones, Jr. took No. 26, which is a number with much prestige in Broncos annals, made famous by Clinton Portis. Other stalwarts of the No. 26 include Super Bowl 50 champion and former Pro Bowler Darian Stewart and Tatum Bell.

Offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey takes on the No. 69, the same number he sported as a top-10 draft pick in San Francisco. Offensive guard Ben Powers takes No. 74, because Garett Bolles owns No. 72 — which is the number he wore in Baltimore.

Jarrett Stidham takes the No. 4, which was recently vacated by Brett Rypien, who signed with the Los Angeles Rams this week. Stidham has worn several numbers as a pro, but rocked the No. 8 at Auburn.

Tight end Adam Trautman takes the trust No. 82, with his positional partner Chris Manhertz sporting No. 84 — a Hall-of-Fame number popularized by Shannon Sharpe. Other notable No. 84s include former Pro Bowl wideout Brandon Lloyd.

Defensive end Zach Allen takes on No. 99, perhaps because his old number in Arizona (94) is currently spoken for by special teams maven and depth rush linebacker Aaron Patrick, who is coming off a torn ACL. It'll be fun to see if these new Broncos are able to create new mystique for their respective numbers as the Sean Payton era in Denver begins.
