Report: Broncos Wrangle RT Mike McGlinchey on $87.5M Contract

The deal reportedly includes "over $50 million guaranteed."
In this story:

Earlier this offseason, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton made two promises: to be aggressive in free agency and upgrade the offensive line while doing so.

Check. And check.

Minutes after signing new left guard Ben Powers to a $52 million contract, Denver landed the top right tackle on the market, former 49ers standout Mike McGlinchey, who inked a five-year, $87.5 million pact that includes "over $50 million guaranteed," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

Drafted ninth overall in 2018, McGlinchey started every game he played in San Francisco (64-of-64) and enjoyed a mini breakout last season, recording the highest run-block win rate (81.3%) of his career for the league's eighth-best rushing attack.

While the 6-foot-8, 310-pound blocker — a consensus All-American at Notre Dame and All-Rookie selection with the Niners — is a physically imposing force, he carries his share of red flags, such as injury history (nine missed games in 2021) and a propensity for holding (four penalties in 2022).

Regardless, McGlinchey, 28, is a demonstrable improvement on his predecessors — plural — and should close the revolving tackle door that's long plagued the Broncos.

His addition provides a massive boon for the entirety of Sean Payton's unit but most importantly quarterback Russell Wilson, whose OL was ranked by Pro Football Focus as the 12th-worst last year.
