Sean Payton: 'Hopefully We Can Keep the Golf Carts Upright'
Tucked away in response to a query about the team's offseason workout program — and apropos of nothing — Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton took a subtle (but presumably friendly) jab at his quarterback, Russell Wilson.
"This month is lifting and running," Payton said Thursday during a pre-draft press conference alongside general manager George Paton. "If there’s a question, it’s, ‘How are the weights going?’ We see these guys running in the morning when we’re coming in here for draft meetings. We’re not in a meeting room setting. I don’t want the players to feel like they’re pulling into the parking lot coming to football practice in April. That’s just not happening. It’s great to see these guys around. Hopefully we can keep the golf carts upright. No meetings, just weight room and running.”
Catch the golf cart line? It was a reference to Wilson's recent snafu at Arrowhead Golf Course where he now-infamously flipped into a bunker. According to DenverSports.com, the cart was being driven by Broncos safety Justin Simmons when it tumbled into a sand trap as eyewitnesses scrambled to capture the incident.
The accident occurred on the front nine while Wilson and Simmons were looking for one of their golf balls to the left of the fairway.
"If I had to guess, I’d say it was Russ’s ball,” the eyewitness said. “Seems like they were looking for his ball all freaking day.”
Neither Wilson nor Simmons was injured, and the former even met the mishap with self-deprecating humor.
All's well that ends well, though Payton probably would prefer the $245 million signal-caller steer clear of the links for a bit.
